What is the SAT?
- Length: 3 hours
- Sections:
- Math (section with calculator and without calculator) - This is the longest section that takes 80 mins (25 mins No Calculator, 55 mins Calculator) and is worth 800 points. On average, students receive roughly one and a half minutes per question. It is crucial to properly move answers to your answer sheet and take advantage of using a calculator. With our tutors, students will plan strategies to take the exam and learn the tools needed to simplify math calculations and take a full advantage of using a calculator. If you are an international student, we will also go through the English vocabulary that will be necessary to take the exam.
- Evidence-Based Reading This section consists of 5 passages, is responsible for 400 points and has a time limit of 65 minutes. The Reading section is often also described as the toughest section - the student receives roughly one and a half minutes per question, but is now required to read complex passages at the same time. Each reading passage is different and will require different strategies for making notes, answering questions efficiently and comprehending the context of the text. With our tutors, students will create their strategies that fit their pace and reading level. International students will receive additional help, such as recommendations of books that will help in the compression of older texts, books that will help strengthen vocabulary, or books to practice understanding the context of the passages.
- Writing This section is 35 minutes in length and is worth 400 points. The Writing section will test students’ grammar skills as they read passages similar to the Reading section. Our tutors will help teach the grammar skills, context clues and strategies necessary to complete this section.
- Cost: $46 (additional fees for international students)
- Highest SAT Score: 1600
Which is better?
SAT VS ACT
Both of the exams are tough, but the main difference will be each student’s personal preference. However, our team can help you find which test you prefer if this has not already been determined. After our first consultation meeting, each student’s task will be to complete two mock exams, one SAT and one ACT, provided by our team. Following completion of both exams, your Advantageous Education tutor will organize another call to ask for your feedback. Main points that will help us choose the right exam for you will be:
- Time limit per section - Students receive much less time per question on the ACT than they do on the SAT. Students must consider how they perform under time limits, how they feel about the pace of the exam and their preference of these types of questions.
- The science section - The SAT does not have a science section. Students must consider their level of understanding when reading scientific reading passages.
- Math section - The SAT contains two math sections - in one of them, the use of a calculator is prohibited. This can be a big factor for students that underachieve in math and need to use a calculator.
Remember - these points will not define your exam. Each student has different preferences. Our team will discuss your feedback and review your scores to help choose the right test for you!
How can I take the SAT?
- Students must create an account through College Board, a non-profit organization that administers the SAT. To sign up, go to https://collegeboard.org.
- By clicking on the SAT section, students can register for an exam, check for available testing centers, check for testing dates and view scores.
Interpretation of SAT Results
College admissions pay attention to each section of the SAT. The overall score is important, but, for example, engineering schools will pay greater attention to the Math section, while liberal art colleges look more at the Evidence-Based Reading section.
